چکیده

We denote by χg(G) the game chromatic number of a graph G, which is the smallest number of colors Alice needs to win the coloring game on G. We know from Montassier et al. [M. Montassier, P. Ossona de Mendez, A. Raspaud and X. Zhu, Decomposing a graph into forests, J. Graph Theory Ser. B, 102(1):38-52, 2012] and, independantly, from Wang and Zhang, [Y. Wang and Q. Zhang. Decomposing a planar graph with girth at least 8 into a forest and a matching, Discrete Maths, 311:844-849, 2011] that planar graphs with girth at least 8 have game chromatic number at most 5. One can ask if this bound of 5 can be improved for a sufficiently large girth. In this paper, we prove that it cannot. More than that, we prove that there are cactuses CT (i.e. graphs whose edges only belong to at most one cycle each) having χg(CT ) = 5 despite having arbitrary large girth, and even arbitrary large distance between its cycles.

List coloring the square of sparse graphs with large degree

We consider the problem of coloring the squares of graphs of bounded maximum average degree, that is, the problem of coloring the vertices while ensuring that two vertices that are adjacent or have a common neighbour receive different colors. Borodin et al. proved in 2004 and 2008 that the squares of planar graphs of girth at least seven and sufficiently large maximum degree ∆ are list (∆ + 1)-...

Splitting Planar Graphs of Girth 6 into Two Linear Forests with Short Paths

Recently, Borodin, Kostochka, and Yancey (On 1-improper 2-coloring of sparse graphs. Discrete Mathematics, 313(22), 2013) showed that the vertices of each planar graph of girth at least 7 can be 2-colored so that each color class induces a subgraph of a matching. We prove that any planar graph of girth at least 6 admits a vertex coloring in 2 colors such that each monochromatic component is a p...

(5, 2)-Coloring of Sparse Graphs

We prove that every triangle-free graph whose subgraphs all have average degree less than 12/5 has a (5, 2)-coloring. This includes planar and projective-planar graphs with girth at least 12. Also, the degree result is sharp; we construct a minimal non(5, 2)-colorable triangle-free graph with 10 vertices that has average degree 12/5.

Homomorphisms from sparse graphs with large girth

We show that a planar graph with girth at least 20t−2 3 has circular chromatic number at most 2+ 1t , improving earlier results. This follows from a general result establishing homomorphisms into special targets for graphs with given girth and given maximum average degree. Other applications concern oriented chromatic number and homomorphisms into mixed graphs with colored edges.

A Complexity Dichotomy for the Coloring of Sparse Graphs

Gallucio, Goddyn and Hell proved in 2001 that in any minor-closed class, graphs with large enough girth have a homomorphism to any given odd cycle. In this paper, we study the computational aspects of this problem. We show that for any minor-closed class F containing all planar graphs, and such that all minimal obstructions are 3-connected, the following holds: for any k there is a g = g(F , k)...
